The first train to go across the river bridge was cause for an enormous celebration. Approximately 8,000 people gathered to witness No. 54 crossing the bridge. Twenty thousand people were on hand for the fireworks display held to honor this historic event. The original bridge faithfully spanned the waters of the Ohio for 47 years before the present double-tracked structure replaced it on 31 Dec 1932. Although some two generations intervened between the two dedications, a number of the same people witnessed both ceremonies. Frank KRUG, was the fireman on the first train to cross the older bridge and was an honored guest in 1932 at the opening ceremonies of the new bridge. So was the then Vice President T. E. BROOKS, who an operator at Henderson when the bridge first opened.
